As someone who is currently in the thick of researching my own Medieval history project, I felt seen when you shared your frustration on everyone having the same names. And to really keep us on our toes, the nobles love to change their surname with each new title they're awarded. Anyway, before I go off on a rant of my own, just want to congratulate you on the book and thank you for the post. Dirtbags is always a highlight of my day when it pops up in my inbox.
The title “Henry IV, Part II” does have “First Blood, Part 2” energy. The real title opportunity were missed, though: “Henry VI episode I: Revenge of the Richard” “Episode II: Revenge of the Other Richard” “Episode IV: Revenge on Richard”.
I do love that picture. “Boss! Boss I got the sword! Hard to swim with it, could I get a little help here?” “You’re doing great! I’m looking forward to seeing you when you get back to land!”
I'm certain that I also exclaimed "not another goddamn Thomas!" at least a dozen times while working on Tudor history research in grad school. Also I knew absolutely nothing about Thomas Mallory other than his authorship of this work and now I am delighted to know how much of a dirtbag he was.
Congrats on your upcoming book! I just read Will Eisner's graphic novel "Fagin the Jew," which gives him a backstory to combat Dickens' antisemitic caricature. Looking forward to your interpretation.
I did a lot of research on (and read bits of) Le Morte d'Arthur when I was retelling some of the Arthurian Legends as short stories, but I never really looked into Sir Thomas Malory himself - so this was awesome to read, thank you! 😄

“Buck Fuckingham!” I CHORTLED 😂

why did they not put you in charge of naming the history plays, this is fantastic
The image of Sir Thomas Malory as the road runner is one I will cherish forever! Thank you.

Very funny. Very informative. Very enjoyable.
Thanks 😀
My own family's version of "I know that building!" is to shout "Been there!" in unison everytime a place we recognise appears on the television.
Oh, and I've spent my entire adult life around writers. They are all Thomas Mallory.
this is the best summary of Malory i've ever read, laughed a LOT
Excellent as usual. Illustrations, I believe, courtesy of one of my favorite Historical Weirdos, Aubrey Beardsley. (pre-ordering book now...)
As always, I alotte pucker kisses ("mwah! mwah") for this dirtbaggy tribute.
Once again, kudos to the subheadings puns. I tip my hat to you.
